Anthropic is preparing for a public offering that market watchers expect to occur later this year, with projections suggesting the company could be valued at as high as $2 trillion. This upcoming listing is poised to create significant financial gains for both the earliest investors and those who joined in later funding stages. Even before the shares go public, the current private market valuation of $965 billion has already inflated the value of holdings for many venture capital firms and individual backers to the billions.
According to data from Bloomberg, the financial positions of several key stakeholders illustrate the scale of these potential returns. The valuations cited below reflect the company’s most recent private market price, providing a snapshot of the current worth of these stakes before any additional appreciation from the IPO.
Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, is among the most prominent individual beneficiaries of this growth. Schmidt participated in Anthropic’s Series A round in 2021, a period when PitchBook data indicates the startup was valued at $461 million. His initial investment has matured into a holding of approximately 1% of the company. At the current private valuation, this relatively small percentage ownership translates to a stake worth nearly $10 billion.
Iconiq, a major investment firm, made a substantial late-stage bet on Anthropic last year. The firm committed $6 billion to the company when its valuation stood at $183 billion. This significant infusion of capital has since grown in value to $17 billion. Analysts suggest that this position has the potential to double in value once the company completes its initial public offering.
Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D funding round, has also accumulated a massive position in the AI lab. The firm has invested more than $1 billion into Anthropic over the course of its involvement. Based on the latest private market figures, Menlo Ventures’ total stake is currently valued at $14 billion, reflecting the rapid appreciation of the company’s worth since those earlier investments.
Sequoia, one of the most well-known venture capital firms, entered the picture more recently, backing the AI lab for the first time earlier this year. At the time of its initial investment, Anthropic was already valued at $380 billion. Sequoia invested $3 billion, securing approximately 1% ownership of the company. Despite the late entry, the investment has already more than doubled in value due to the company’s continued surge in valuation.
Sound Ventures, a firm launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, has also built a substantial position through multiple rounds of investment. The firm initially invested $35 million in Anthropic’s 2023 Series C round. It subsequently funneled an additional $400 million into the company, resulting in a stake that is now worth billions. It is noted that Kutcher left Sound Ventures earlier this year to launch a new venture capital firm.
Spark Capital holds a unique position as the only venture capital firm known to have a board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested $75 million during the same 2023 Series C round, when the company’s valuation was significantly lower at $5 billion. That initial position has expanded dramatically, ballooning more than ninetyfold to a current value of $7 billion, highlighting the extraordinary return on investment for early participants in that specific funding round.
The aggregation of these individual and institutional stakes underscores the massive financial interest in Anthropic’s success. As the company moves closer to its anticipated public listing, these early and mid-stage investors stand to realize substantial paper profits. The disparity between the early valuations and the current $965 billion private mark illustrates the rapid capitalization of the AI sector, setting the stage for a high-profile entry into the public markets this year.
